How can I grow out my eyelashes?

My eyelashes are so short and I want to know if there is anything I can do to help them grow, other then wearing mascara-- I actually want them to grow, and I don't want to buy one of those eyelash grower things like Latisse or whatever, are there any mascaras that will help them grow?, otherwise what could I do with things I have at home?
